The Team Buzzer is one of the traditional league events that takes place towards the end of the season.  Clubs are invited to submit teams of four to play each other once – or twice if there is a poor turnout. The buzzer sounds every ten seconds and anyone failing to move on the buzzer loses and illegal moves lose e.g. the king can be taken. The evening is a lot of fun but in recent years the event has been poorly attended.  Of the seven clubs currently in the league only three entered this year, a sad state of affairs but not a surprising one. We thought our team looked good on paper but unfortunately for us Herne Bay decided to put out a stronger one.

David Faldon writes:

Broadstairs finished second at the East Kent and Thanet Chess Team Buzzer on Tuesday evening, or as Ian put it, second to last. Teams of four from Broadstairs, Herne Bay and Margate all played each other twice, at a time limit of 10 seconds per move. There were many close games and narrow escapes but in the end Herne Bay won all their matches and Margate lost all of theirs. The whole event was great fun and the only pity was that there weren’t more teams. Maybe next year Broadstairs should send two teams? Broadstairs scores (in board order): David Horton 2/4, David Faldon 2/4, Ian Hames 2/4 and Paul Carfrae 3.5/4. Margate kindly provided the venue as well as constant tea and biscuits. Many thanks to John Clarke for running the event so smoothly and to Ian Hames for giving me a lift home as it was absolutely tipping it down by the time we finished.
