BOARD 4. Our Michael J took less than an hour to put us 1-0 up

BOARD 3. Michael D. took a bit longer. After a queen swap off he completed a clever mate with two bishops, a knight and a rook. Wow 2-0 up and looking good (so we thought)

BOARD 2 With the position of the match where it stood Mark Towlson was having none of the draw offers our Bob was making and slowly turned the game his way with a one pawn advantage.       2-1 to us.

BOARD 1 David Erwee picked off a knight early on in our game after I stupidly left a pawn pinned and unable to retake. I then tried to make a comeback from his then all out attack on my kingside but he was too good for me and finished me off by 10.20.

Result: 2-2 draw.   2016 played 1 drawn 1 – we are still unbeaten JUST!

Ian Hames was not the only Broadstairs player to emerge with credit from the Thanet Congress last weekend. Reg Pidduck’s 3/5 was not quite enough to win one of the main prizes in the Minor section but it was enough to win the Oyster Shield. This prize is awarded to the Thanet senior player with the highest score in the Intermediate or Minor sections. It was first awarded in 2011 having been donated to the Congress by Whitstable Chess Club. The club folded the previous year and wanted to leave something tangible as a legacy and with Whitstable famous for its oysters, the choice of name was not a difficult one. Reg not only won the Oyster Shield this year but he was also the first winner in 2011 and in two of the other four years in between. Well done!

Thanet Chess Congress 2016

I have not been able to track down any games from the Thanet Open.  I would especially like to feature one of Alan Merry’s victories but if anyone reading this can supply a game or two, or suggest how I can access the games, I should be grateful.

Broadstairs  4      Bridge  0

1. Bob Cronin   (112) 1-0     Shahid Sahi (115)
2. Andy Flood   (111) 1-0     Ray Rennells (86)
3. Reg Pidduck  (106) 1-0     Graeme Boxall (85)
4. Michael Doyle (89) 1-0      Ian Redmond (78)

Even before this match got underway, Broadstairs were already Walker Shield Champions for the second year running as previous results meant we could not be caught.

BOARD 1: STILL IN FORM BOB. First to finish, Bob won an exchange early on, but in giving it back gained a two-pawn advantage. This then became three which won him the endgame. 1-0 to us.

BOARD 3: MY FAVOURITE DUTCH. My fave opening was strong but Graeme foiled all my attempts to get control. Only in the end with queens, knights and pawns was I able to get a one pawn advantage, which was enough. 2-0 to us

BOARD 2: CREDIT TO RAY. Ray Rennells was 25 points lower in grade to our Andy but put up a sterling fight to the finish. In the end a bishop to the good , Andy won. 3-0 to us

BOARD 4: EVEN CONTEST. This match between Michael and Ian was the closest of the night. Once again it was down to the pawns to fight to the last. Ian resigned when Michael broke through. A flattering 4-0 win against worthy opponents.

For 2016 we have won the Walker Shield with played 4 won 4  (shame Margate had to pull out).

This week’s game is a fine win by Reg from our recent match with Herne Bay. Losing the exchange early on, he fought back to win a pawn and then turned the tables with a neat finish.

Millar Cup: Broadstairs v Herne Bay

White resigns

Broadstairs  2½       Herne Bay  1½

1. Bob Cronin   (112) 1-0    Ronnie Melhuish (103)
2. Andy Flood   (111) 0-1     Brian Humble (98)
3. Reg Pidduck  (106) ½-½      Jamie Dawson (76)
4. Michael Doyle (89) 1-0      John Heath (e78)

Reg Pidduck writes:

BOARD 4: QUICK WIN. Michael’s attacking nature soon paid off as he pressed John Heath from the start. Having gone a piece up he never let up and duly won inside an hour. 1-0 up to us.

BOARD 1: MATCH OF THE NIGHT. Bob got a deserved win against a cunning Ronnie after pushing two pawns forward into enemy territory and finally getting a touchdown which finished Ronnie off. 2-0 to us.

BOARD 3: YOUNG JAMIE A FORCE.   I was able to play my favourite Dutch defence against Jamie who once again (last September) played extremely well for his 76 grade.  After I turned down a draw offer from Jamie and playing with rook and pawns each, we came to a slight impasse. But Bob’s win on board 1 made my decision to take the draw easy. 2½-½ to us

BOARD 2: TABLES TURNED.  It’s normally Andy that slowly turns the screw on his opponents. But this time it was Brian after winning a piece and gaining a very good win against our board two star. A 2½-1½ win for Broadstairs.

That’s played 3 won 3 in our quest to keep the Walker Shield.  Well done team!
