Broadstairs  ½     Bridge 3½

1 Reg Pidduck (107) 0-1    David Gold (99)
2 Bob Cronin (104) ½-½    Graeme Boxall (99)
3 Michael Doyle (81) 0-1    Ian Redmond (75)
4 def. 0-1    Ray Rennells (75)

BOARD 4.  CALAMITY. An eleventh hour phone call from Josh’s mum sealed our fate as Captain Michael had to move up to board 3  and we defaulted on board 4. Get well soon, Josh. 1-0 down.

BOARD 3.  IAN TURNS THE GAME.  First to finish, Michael over-estimated his attack and Ian was able to turn the game to his advantage. 2-0 down

BOARD 2.  BEST GAME OF THE NIGHT. An equal struggle developed between Bob and Graeme and every time I looked I could not pick a winner. Down to pawns each, a draw was decided.  2.5-0.5 down.

BOARD 1. DAVID GETS GOLD. This is the first time I have played David and a worthy opponent he turned out to be as at no time did I feel in control and he spotted all my sneaky tricks. I finally resigned being an exchange down and facing his pawn touching down.

Lost match 3.5 – 0.5. Well done, Bridge.

So, as promised, here is the latest Walker Shield table and although yesterday’s defeat was disappointing, all is not lost.  We have only reached half-way in the season and no team is unbeaten or therefore unbeatable. It may come down to ‘goal difference’ in the end so a few crushing victories would come in handy.

Broadstairs  3     Woodnesborough A  1

1 Reg Pidduck (107) 0-1    Steve Garrett (e79)
2 Andy Flood (106) 1-0    Oli Garrett (e53)
3 Bob Cronin (104) 1-0    George Allen (36)
4 Michael Doyle (81) 1-0    Sarah Garrett (e25)

Reg Pidduck writes:

BOARD 4. OUR RED HOT CAPTAIN. Sarah Garrett,  playing her first game, was unlucky to come up against our red hot captain Michael Doyle and lost after eight moves with a Queen and Bishop mate. 1-0 up

BOARD 3. RELIABLE BOB. Young George also  had an early bath with Bob finishing by 8 o’ clock.  2-0 up

BOARD 2. STAR OF THE NIGHT.  What a fight young eight-year-old Oli put up against Andy. Although Andy had gone a knight up early on, Oli did not allow him to make any mistakes as Andy had to slowly find the right moves to avoid the young star coming back at him, Andy finally winning. 3-0 up

BOARD 1. WELL PREPARED STEVE. Steve and I had already drawn in our previous encounter. So we were both up for a return match. Steve had anticipated my playing a Dutch against his 1.d4 and had planned his game. For the first 24 moves I felt I was okay but needed to press and made a bad move on my 25th which Steve pounced on and from then on pounded my King all the way from f7 over to a7  finishing with a mate. Well played, Steve.

We have now played four, won three and lost one in our quest for the Walker Shield.

                                           Broadstairs  1         Ramsgate 3

1 Reg Pidduck (107) 0-1    Malcolm Snashall (107)
2 Bob Cronin (104) 0-1    Kenneth Keeler (91)
3 Josh Vaughan (98) 0-1    Bob Wallace  (85)
4 Michael Doyle (81) 1-0    Terry Green (47)

Reg Pidduck writes:

BOARD 2. Bob’s game against Ken Keeler looked even for the first hour. When I looked again Bob was a piece down from which he never recovered. 1-0 down

BOARD 3. Josh got a rook and a pawn for a knight and a bishop early on and was pushing for a win. Bob Wallace then got the swap offs he needed and the end game went.   Josh, with just his king, and Bob with king, knight and bishop. All credit to Bob finding the right moves to get the checkmate. 2-0 down.

BOARD 4.  Captain Michael went a knight up and made it tell in getting a passed pawn, finally getting a touchdown to secure a win. (Michael is now 3/3 in the Walker) 2-1 down.

BOARD 1 Malcolm Snashall is my HEX . In all the years I have known him I have never beaten him.  I was a pawn down in an endgame where a draw now was not enough. In venturing out, he finished me off with a series of checks and the game was lost .( Looking forward to our next encounter Malcolm. ) A 3-1 loss.

We have now played 3, won 2, lost 1 in the Walker Shield.

                        Broadstairs  3½         Woodnesborough  ½

1 Reg Pidduck (107) ½-½    Steve Garrett (e82)
2 Bob Cronin (104) 1-0    David  Seunarine (e53)
3 Josh Vaughan (98) 1-0    Daniel Allen (36)
4 Michael Doyle (81) 1-0    George Allen (36)

Reg Pidduck writes:

BOARD 4. Captain Michael put his opponent’s king under threat from the start, even stopping him from castling. Finally young George resigned after a fierce attack from Michael’s knight and queen. 1-0 up.

BOARD 2. Our Bob also had a young opponent (they certainly bring them on well at the Woody club). Always in control, Bob duly won. 2-0 up.

BOARD 1. Steve Garrett’s estimated grade of 82 looked about correct after 15 moves as I was well in control. But then he played like a 110 and parried and found all the right moves to stop me breaking through and by move 37 I offered a draw which was agreed. Lovely game, Steve. Hope we play again soon. 2.5-0.5 up

BOARD 3. Daniel Allen also played well above his grade as he kept his game with Josh tight till quite late in the evening. Finally, Josh found a knight fork and Daniel’s position crumbled.

Result: a 3½-½ victory for Broadstairs. Now we have played 2 won 2.

                                           Broadstairs  2½         Margate  1½

1 Reg Pidduck (107) ½-½    John Clarke (104)
2 Bob Cronin (104) 1-0    Leon Garfield (100)
3 Michael Doyle (81) 1-0    Roy McAloney (83)
4 Michael Jenkinson (80) 0-1    James Maskell (74)

Reg Pidduck writes:

BOARD 4.   STEADY JAMES .  James Maskell was first to finish with a solid performance against our higher graded Michael Jenkinson. 1-0 down

BOARD 3. A CAPTAIN’S INNINGS. Our new Walker captain started with a win. Michael takes up the story. “Being unfamiliar with the Scandinavian Defence as I was, I still gained a rook for nothing but in doing so got my Queen trapped. Finally escaping, I won with a Bishop and Knight threatening mate. 1-1

BOARD 1. SECOND TIME IN A WEEK. John Clarke and I had also played each other on Monday in the Hargreaves Shield but I could not repeat my win this time as John kept me at bay from my better position. Down to a rook and three pawns each, the game was decided a draw. 1.5-1.5

BOARD 2. YET AGAIN BOB. Our Bob Cronin always seems to come up with the goods in our close matches. Going into the endgame, he was a Knight up but still had a determined Leon to contend with. He finally got a passed pawn and won the game and the match for Broadstairs. 2.5- 1.5

A first win for our new captain and I hope there are many more.
